What are common benign breast disorders?
Cyclic breast discomfort, fibrocystic breast changes, mastitis.
What are the risk factors for breast cancer?
Age, family history, high fat diet, high alcohol intake, estrogen treatment, early menarche, late menopause, late or no pregnancies.
What are signs of breast cancer?
Harder lumps, less mobile, less painful, irregular shape, unclear borders.
What are the diagnostic methods for breast cancer?
BSE, clinical breast examination, mammography, biopsy.
What are the American Cancer Society's guidelines for mammography?
If 40 and over, every year; if 20-39, every three years.
What is the definition of menopause?
Permanent cessation of menstrual cycles, diagnosed after a woman has not had a period for 12 consecutive months.
What are symptoms of menopause?
Hot flashes, vaginal dryness, osteoporosis, changes in skin elasticity.
What is the purpose of hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?
To relieve menopausal symptoms by replacing lost hormones.
What are common menstrual disorders?
Dysmenorrhea, PMS, endometriosis.
What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?
A complex endocrine disorder characterized by infertility, obesity, and menstrual disturbances.
What nursing diagnoses might be applicable for women post-mastectomy?
Risk for anxiety, ineffective breathing pattern, impaired tissue perfusion, ineffective coping.
What are treatment options for breast cancer?
Radiation, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological response modifiers, mastectomy.
What is the treatment for endometriosis?
Surgery, hormonal therapy, pain management.
What is a cystocele?
A condition where the bladder sags into the vaginal space.
What are signs of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)?
Fever, sore throat, headache, dizziness, confusion, rash, muscle weakness.
What are recommended treatments for dysmenorrhea?
Antiprostaglandin medications, regular exercise, stress management.
What are common benign growths of the female reproductive system?
Fibroids, polyps, cysts.
What is the first sign of cervical cancer?
Typically discovered through a Pap smear.
What are the stages of breast cancer?
Stage 0: abnormal cells; Stage 1: tumor < 1 inch; Stage 2: tumor < 2 inches; Stage 3: extensive spread; Stage 4: spread beyond breast.
What methods are used to perform pregnancy termination?
Chemical methods, manual vacuum aspiration, D&C, D&E.
What are the characteristics of Bartholin cysts?
Infected or obstructed glands causing pain during activities.
