Asexual Reproduction
Reproduction that does not involve the union of sex cells and in which one parent produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent.
Sexual Reproduction
Reproduction in which the sex cells from two parents unite to produce offspring that share traits from both parents.
Egg
A sex cell produced by a female.
Sperm
The male sex cell.
External Fertilization
The union of sex cells outside the bodies of the parents.
Internal Fertilization
Fertilization of an egg and sperm that occurs inside the body of a female.
Sepals
In a flower, one of the outermost rings of modified leaves that protect the flower bud.
Petals
One of the usually brightly colored, leaf-shaped parts that make up one of the rings of a flower.
Stamen
The male reproductive structure of a flower that produces pollen and consists of an anther at the tip of a filament.
Pistil
The female reproductive part of a flower that produces seeds and consists of an ovary, style, and stigma.
Ovary
In flowering plants, it is the lower part of a pistil that produces eggs in ovules.
Pollen
The tiny granules that contain the male gametophyte (sex cell) of seed plants.
Pollination
The transfer of pollen from the male reproductive structures to the female structures of seed plants.
Nesting
A behavior or instinct in which the pregnant female in animals prepares a home for the unborn newborn.
Herding
A behavior where animals group either to move from place to place or for protection.
