How fast an animal uses energy ?

Measured by:

• Direct calorimetry : Measure heat produced

• Indirect calorimetry : Measures 02 consumed and CO2 produced

Types of Metabolic Rate :

• Basal Metabolic rate : Energy used while resting ( endotherms Warm blooded : Dog, Humans)

• Standard Metabolic rate : Energy used while resting ( ectoderm Cold blooded : Snakes, frogs)

• Routine Metabolic Rate: Normal daily energy use

• Active Metabolic Rate : Used during activity

• Field Metabolic rate : Energy use during normal life in the natural evironment

Small animal : fast metabolism

Large animal : Slower metabolism

• Anabolism : Builds molecule —> Uses energy
