What is the acid dissociation contsant (Ka)?
An equilibrium constant for weak acids that relates [HA] to [H+].
What equilibrium is established when weak acids dissociate?
HA(aq) -><- [H+](aq) + A-(aq)
What is the expression for Ka?
Ka = [H+][A-]/[HA]
Why is Ka necessary?
Weak acids only dissociate partially in solution so [H+] doesn't equal acid concentration.
How can the Ka expression be simplified?
Ka = [H+]2/[HA]
What is pKa and what can it tell you about an acid's pH?
pKa is a logarithmic constant which can be calculated from Ka for comparison. A high pKa indicates a low pH.
How can pKa be calculated from Ka?
pKa = -log10(Ka)
Ka = 10-pKa (to the power of)
