Medications that can stabilize mood in acute mania, prevent return of mania or depression, and decrease incidence of suicide.
Lithium Carbonate
Prototype mood stabilizer, also known as Eskalith, commonly referred to as lithium salts.
Fine Tremors
A common adverse effect of lithium carbonate; can be managed with beta-blockers or dose adjustments.
Toxicity Levels for Lithium
Normal serum levels are 0.4-1.5; early signs of toxicity include diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, and fine hand tremors.
Monitoring for Lithium Therapy
Requires monitoring serum blood levels due to risks of toxicity; factors like low sodium levels can exacerbate toxicity.
Patient Teaching for Lithium
Patients should maintain adequate fluid intake (1.5-3L daily), not change salt usage without consulting a provider, and report signs of toxicity.
Signs of Lithium Toxicity
Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, hand tremors, and excessive sweating; severe symptoms can lead to coma or death.
Long-term Effects of Lithium
Possible long-term effects include hypothyroidism and weight gain, necessitating monitoring of thyroid levels.
