Metallic bond
A bond between two metals.
Rows of positive ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons which are free to move.
Ionic bond
A bond between a metal and a non-metal
Covalent bond
A bond that forms when electrons are shared between non-metals
Giant structures
Billions of atoms covalently bonded together
e.g. diamond
Small molecules
Contain only a few atoms. Different molecules are held together by weak intermolecular forces
e.g. water
Large molecules
Contain many repeated units joined covalently in a chain
e.g. polymers
Ionic compounds
Giant structures of ions held together by strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions
-high melting &boiling points
-large amounts of energy need to break strong bonds
-when liquid or aqueous, can conduct electricity
-ions are free to move
