what does CANMOP stand for?
it stand for:
-canadian model of occupation participation
what does CANMOP focus on?
so the canmop model focuses on promoting occupational PARTICIPATION in the highest impact context (micro, meso, and macro)
--> so it goes beyond promoting occupational performance (the ability to perform in a typical way), and occupation engagment (performance in that moment)
what does occupational participation mean?
occupational participation is defined as having access to, initiating, and sustaining valued occupations within meaningful relationships, and context
--> so it goes beyond looking at occupational performance, and occupational engagement
what are the KEY elements of CANMOP?
1. meaning and purpose
2. histories and relationships
3. possibilites: access, initiate, and sustain
4. context: micro, meso, macro
1. Meaning and Purpose
=its the meaning and purpose of the occupational participation
Meaning and Purpose
-whats it influenced by?
its influenced by histories and relationships
what are the 4 basic needs for meanign and purpose?
1. safety and sruvival needs
2. autonomy
3. competence
4. relatedness
1. safety and survival needs
this relates to Maslows hierarchy of needs
--> in which adequate survival and safety needs drives ones behaviour
Autonomy, competence and relatedness all come from what?
so they all come from the self-determination theory
--> self determination theory states that human mOTIVATION is driven by the need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness
autonomy
-defintion
this is when the perosn feels that their actions align with their own values and community values
relatedness
-definition
this is feeling connected to others, feel supported by other, and being supported by others
competence
-definition
feeling that you are effective in yoru occupations that are important to you
Histories and Relationships
-what does this shape?
histories and relationships shape the meaning and purpose of occupational participation
-> *cause remember we said that menaign and purpose is influenced by histories and relationships*
what do histories and relationships include?
all indvidual and collectives have network of relationhips (eg: relationhsip with others, the environment, ancestors, culture, political, economic structures, etc)
history can be viewed at what levels:
1. history of the INDIVIDUAL
2. History of the COLLECTIVE
1. history of the INDIVIDUAL
this is the history of the person
--> their life long development; their network of relationships, their early expeirences and how those impact later life experiences
2. History of collective
this is more COMMUNITY history
--> so it looks at community/hsitory thriving, traumas, relationships with governments, etc
Possibilities -access, initiate, and sustain
-what can occupational therapist do + why?
occupational therapsit need to develop an deep understanding of the relationship between the person and their context (micro, meso, and macro)
--> so this would be at the INDIVIDUAL & COLLECTIVE level
--> so having a deep udnerstanding of the realtionship between the person and their context will allow the OT to identify and support changes that can happen within these context (micro, meso, and macro) in order to EXPAND OCCUPATIONAL POSSIBILITES --> so the goal is to have them access, initatie, and sustain occupational participation
Understanding the relationship between the person and context includes looking at the persons (individual level):
-physical, affective, and cogntive structures
-values, beliefs, social identities, spirituality
Understanding the relationship between the person and context includes looking at the persons (collective level):
-interrelationships with famileis, values, beleifs
-shaered histories
-available resources
what is context?
context is where the person carries out their occupations
--> the context is considered by the OT when trying to expand occupational possibilties
Context includes:
Micro, meso, macro
--> so at each context level, the OT can idienty and support changes in those context to expnad occupational possibilites;
--> also at each context, the OT can look for opportunities to build on the clients STRENGTHS, and reduce barriers
Micro context
this includes interactions with family, friends, peers, teachers, healthcare providers, and the physical environment
Meso context
this includes more system level interactions
--> with organization, social systems, built environments, etc
--> conside the clients eligbility for services, cost for travel, etc
Macro context
this is more socio-economic and political context
-consider: policies that contribute to inequality, inequality, etc
what does context influence?
it influences people abilties to access, initiate, and sustain occupation --> so the OT can consdier expanding occupational possibilities at multiple context levels (micro, meso, macro)
Access
-what would the OT do
they would collaborate with the client, and consider how the context supports their initiation in occupational participation
Initiation
-what would the OT do
the OT would collaborate with the client to consider ways to start or restart occupations in a given context
Sustaining
the oT would consider participation in the occupation over time
what is the PROCESS of using the CANMOP ?
1. The OT would look at the meaning and purpose of the indvidual for occupational participation -- so this includes considering their histories and relationships (both at individual and collective level)
2. then the OT will examine the potential for access, initiation, and sustaining occupation participation -- so they would consider expanding their occupational opportunities -- and to do this the OT must develop a deep understanding of the realtionship between the client and the context
3. and then the OT will consider the micro, meso, and macro context in which occupational participation takes place
what are things that are unique about the CANMOP?
1. it focuses on occupational participation
2. it focuses on meaning and purpose --> so it looks at the true menaing and purpose of occupational participation which is inflcuend by histories and relationships
3. it explicitly looks at history --> and thats not only at the indvidual level , but at the collectivist level (community hsitories and trauma) --> so it take more a a life course appraoch that considers many indviduals and ancestors
4. it considers the different levels of context -- so the micro, meso, and macro -
what are the STRENGTHS of the CANMOP?
1. it apprecaites menaing and purpose
2. it appreciates how the different levels of the context influences occupational participation
3. it appreicates how histories and relationships shape the meaning and purpose of occupational participation
4. it centres around occupational participation -- so it moves beyond occupation performance and engagement
LIMITATIONS of the CANMOP
-since its still quite new, its not quite yet an evidence based framework -- so its highly cocneptual
-its quite complex to apply and for the client to udnerstand --eg: the different context (micro, meso, and macro)
OT related THEMES:
-holistic approach --> considers their hsitories & relationships, and how that shapes their meaning and purpose for occupations participation; it considers all the clients context like micro, meso, and macro
-client centered --> OT collaborate with client to develop a deeper understanding of their context to expand occupational possibilities -- so the OT collborates to consder hwo their context impact occupational participation; collborates to consider ways to start or restart occupations, and how that cna be sustained
