Redox Reactions
Oxidation-reduction reactions or reactions in which electrons are transferred from one atom to another.
Oxidation
Loss of electrons in a redox reaction.
Reduction
Gain of electrons in a redox reaction.
Oxidizing Agent
Gains electrons to cause the reduction of another atom.
Reducing Agent
Loses electrons to cause the oxidation of another atom.
Neutralization Reaction
A reaction between an acid and a base producing a salt and water.
Precipitation Reaction
A reaction that produces an insoluble ion from aqueous ions.
Electronegativity
A measure of how strongly atoms attract additional electrons; more electronegative elements tend to gain electrons.
Metal Active Behavior
In reactions involving metals and nonmetals, metals tend to lose electrons, while nonmetals tend to gain electrons.
