My day at university starts early, and I’m a speech therapy student, so I always feel like the day is going to be long.
I wake up a little before my alarm, and I sit there thinking about the lectures and training that are waiting for me.
While I get dressed and prepare my bag, I try to make sure I haven't forgotten anything, as my bag is always heavy and filled with books, notebooks, and papers.
On the way to university, while I'm on public transport, I love watching the people around me, especially children, and I listen to the way they talk without realizing it, because it has become part of my thinking.
As soon as I arrive, I meet my classmates, and we’re all tired but we laugh.
One of my friends always says with a sigh, "We're just starting, and today we have practice too!"
And I reply to her, “It’s okay, one step at a time.”
In the lectures, the professor explains speech and language disorders, presents real cases, and asks us to think: “Why is this person like this? And how can we help this person?”
While I’m sitting there, I write and try to understand, not just memorise.
Sometimes I feel like there’s too much information and that my brain can’t take it all in, but at the same time I feel that what we’re learning is important and meaningful.
After the lectures, we go to practical training, and this is the part that I find the most difficult and impactful.
We enter a small room and sit with a child or an adult who has a speech problem.
Today, for example, I had a child who absolutely refused to speak, even when I asked him questions.
I sat in front of him and calmly said to him, “Would you like to play first and then talk?”
He looked at me for a little while and stayed quiet, and I felt nervous, but I tried to stay calm.
After a little while, he started to interact, and when he said a simple word, I felt really happy, even though the word was small.
After the training finishes, my classmates and I sit and talk about what happened, and each of us tells about her experience, and we try to understand each other.
Before I go home, I sit in the cafeteria for a while, get a coffee, and review my notes.
While I’m sitting there, I feel that university is really tiring, but every day it teaches me something new—not just about my field of study, but also about patience, dealing with people, and about myself too.
