Biology
The scientific study of life.
Reductionism
An approach that reduces complex systems to simple components that are manageable to study.
Emergent Properties
Properties that result from the arrangement and interaction of parts as complexity increases.
Systems Biology
The analysis of the interactions among the parts of a biological system, used to study life at all levels.
Cell Theory
The scientific theory stating that all living organisms are made from cells.
Eukaryotic Cell
A cell that has membrane-enclosed organelles, the largest of which is usually the nucleus.
Prokaryotic Cell
A simpler and usually smaller cell that does not contain a nucleus or other membrane-enclosed organelles.
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)
Structures called chromosomes contain genetic material in this molecular form within cells.
Genes
The units of inheritance that encode information for building the molecules synthesized within the cell.
Nucleotides
Four kinds of chemical building blocks (abbreviated A, G, C, and T) that make up each long chain of DNA.
Gene Expression
The process of converting information from a gene to a cellular product (transcribing DNA into RNA, which is then translated into a protein).
Genome
An organism's entire library of genetic instructions.
Genomics
The study of whole sets of genes in one or more species.
Proteomics
The study of whole sets of proteins and their properties.
Proteome
The entire set of proteins expressed by a given cell, tissue, or organ.
Bioinformatics
The use of computational tools to process a large volume of biological data very rapidly.
Producers
Plants and other photosynthetic organisms that generate chemical energy from sunlight.
Consumers
Organisms that feed on other organisms or their remains.
Feedback Regulation
A biological self-regulation mechanism in which the output or product of a process regulates that very process.
Negative Feedback
The most common form of regulation in living organisms, in which the response acts in opposition to the initial stimulus.
Positive Feedback
A form of regulation in which an end product reinforces or strengthens the initial stimulus.
Evolution
The core theme of biology and scientific explanation for the unity and diversity of organisms, defining living organisms as modified descendants of common ancestors.
Domain Eukarya
The biological domain comprising all eukaryotic organisms, including Plants, Fungi, Animals, and Protists.
Natural Selection
The primary mechanism behind descent with modification, in which the natural environment selects for the propagation of beneficial traits through unequal reproductive success.
Inquiry
The search for information and explanations of natural phenomena.
Data
Recorded observations gathered during scientific study.
Qualitative Data
Data that often takes the form of recorded descriptions.
Quantitative Data
Data expressed as numerical measurements, organized into tables and graphs.
Inductive Reasoning
A type of logic that derives generalizations from a large number of specific observations.
Hypothesis
An explanation, based on observations and assumptions, that leads to a testable prediction.
Experiment
A scientific test carried out under controlled conditions.
Deductive Reasoning
A type of logic that uses general premises to make specific predictions.
Controlled Experiment
An experiment in which an experimental group is compared directly with a control group.
Independent Variable
The factor in an experiment that is manipulated by the researchers.
Dependent Variable
The factor in an experiment that is measured and predicted to be affected in response to the independent variable.
Scientific Theory
A broad explanation that is general enough to lead to many new testable hypotheses and is supported by a large body of evidence compared to a single hypothesis.
Model Organism
A species chosen for intensive study (such as Drosophila melanogaster) whose biological data can be shared among scientists.
