Anticipatory Grief
Response to a real of perceived loss before it occurs
Acute Grief
Syndrome of somatic, functional, and emotional symptoms of distress. Most intense in the first 6 months
Shadow Grief
Considered a normal response often with moments of intermittent sadness (healthy and restorative)
Complicated Grief
Form of acute fried that does not lessen over months or even years after loss
Disenfranchised Grief
Loss that cannot be openly acknowledged or publicly mourned (unspeakable grief)
Supportive Care
Differentiating these forms of grief helps shape empathetic, timely, and targeted nursing interventions
