deductive hypothesis

a hypothesis derived from theory that provides evidence to support, expand, or contradict the theory

guiding hypothesis

as used in qualitative research to describe the use of observations to guide the development of research questions

theory

an organized body of concepts, generalizations, & principles that can be subjected to investigation

nondirectional hypothesis

a research hypothesis that states simply that a relation or difference exists btw variables

replication

a repetition of a study using different subjects or retesting its hypothesis

directional hypothesis

a research hypothesis that states the expected direction of the relation or difference btw variables

operational definitions

operational definitons clarify important terms in a study so that all readers understand the precise meaning the researcher intends

inductive hypothesis

a generalization based on specific observations

null hypothesis

a hypothesis stating that there is no relation (or difference) btw variables & that any relation/difference found will be due to chance; i.e., the result of sampling error

hypothesis

an explanation for the occurrence of certain behaviors, phenomena, or events; a prediction of research findings
