  • Because Earth is a closed system with a limited amount of matter, these cycles ensure that nutrients are constantly reused and recycled to sustain life.

  • This cycle collects, purifies, and distributes the earth’s fixed supply of water

  • Incoming solar radiation moves water at the surface into the atmosphere through evaporation

  • Condensation in the atmosphere and effects of gravity create precipitation which returns water to the earth’s surface

  • Only a very small portion of earth’s water is fresh water

  • This cycle through the biosphere by:

  • Bacteria converting nitrogen into a usable form so it becomes a useful plant nutrient

  • Consumers (herbivores) and decomposers convert nitrogen back into nitrogen gas which is then released into the atmosphere.
