Phylum Annelida
Segmented worms that live in marine, fresh water, and moist terrestrial habitats.
Coelom
The true body cavity that surrounds and contains the digestive tract and other organs.
Peritoneum
The cellular layer that lines both sides of the coelom.
Oligochaeta
Class of annelids that have few bristles and include earthworms.
Setae
Bristles along the body of earthworms, used for movement.
Clitellum
An enlarged ring in segmented worms that secretes mucus for copulation.
Typhlosole
A swollen ridge in the intestine that increases surface area for absorption.
Peristalsis
The kind of rippling motion produced by the contraction of muscle layers in the body wall.
Class Polychaeta
Class of annelids that live in marine environments and often have many bristles.
Parapodia
Lateral appendages used by polychaetes for locomotion and gas exchange.
Class Hirudinea
Class that includes leeches, which lack setae and parapodia and can be predators or parasites.
Anticoagulant
Substance secreted by blood-feeding leeches to prevent clotting.
