What does the Modified Ashworth Scale measure?
Spasticity
Resistance to passive movement/stretch
Used to grade increased muscle tone
What is Grade 0 on the Modified Ashworth Scale?
No increase in muscle tone
What is Grade 1 on the Modified Ashworth Scale?
Slight increase in muscle tone
Catch and release OR minimal resistance
Occurs at the end of ROM
What is Grade 1+ on the Modified Ashworth Scale?
Slight increase in muscle tone
Catch occurs
Followed by minimal resistance
Resistance occurs through less than half of the remaining ROM
What is Grade 2 on the Modified Ashworth Scale?
More marked increase in muscle tone
Increased tone through most of ROM
Affected part is still easily moved
What is Grade 3 on the Modified Ashworth Scale?
Considerable increase in muscle tone
Passive movement is difficult
What is Grade 4 on the Modified Ashworth Scale?
Affected part is rigid
Rigid in flexion or extension
