Diem’s anti-communist purge

  • series of brutal campaigns in Sth V - beginning in 1955

  • January 1956 - “Anti-communist Denunciation Campaign” allowed Diem to issue Ordinance no. 6 - placed anyone considered threat to state and public order in jail or house arrest

Effect of repression:

  • Reduced communist party membership by about 2/3 between 55-59

  • BUT further alienated South Vietnamese people

  • repression intensified with Law 10/59
