transposition of the great vessels

aorta and pulmonary artery are switched

• ASD, VSD, PDA MUST to open

transposition of the great vessels s/s:

• cyanosis

• O2 therapy does not significantly improve saturation

• single loud heart murmur

prostaglandin E1 must be used

truncus arteriosus

one large vessels leaves the heart instead of the pulmonary artery or aorta

blood mixes through shared vessels

truncus arteriosus s/s:

• loud murmur

• echo reveals large VSD and single vessel

• cyanosis

• signs of heart failure

hypoplastic left heart syndrome

left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped

• ASD or PDA must remain open

hypoplastic left heart syndrome s/s:

• cyanosis

• weak pulses

• tachycardia

fatal without repair
