ambivalence is comprised of what two types of talk and what are they? and what difference does this make?

Ambivalence is comprised of:

• Change talk – arguments/reasons/needs for how things could be better, and/or what is not liked about the current situation.

• Sustain talk – any argument/reason/need to maintain the status quo.

In MI, we can influence the amount of change talk (and sustain talk) we and the person ‘hear’.

• The more a person talks about doing (or not doing) something, the more likely they are to do it (or not do it)!

what is discord

Refers to strain or tension in the relationship between the person and the worker.

Discord requires two people – discord in therapy is not solely owned by the person/client. It requires two voices.

The creation and maintenance of discord is just as much about the worker's role and input.

 Worker note: It is the responsibility of the worker to attempt to repair discord.
