Myelodysplastic Syndromes

  • Precursor to Leukemia

  • Group of disorders caused by abnormal bone marrow cells

    • Precancerous state

    • 30% develop acute leukemia

    • Anemia

    • Neutropenia

    • Thrombocytopenia: Not a shortage of stem cells, but defective & do not mature properly

  • Only cure:

    • Stem cell transplant

    • Age cut off

    • RBC & platelet transfusions for supportive care
