High amplitude sucking

Baby suck on pacifier. Suck fast when happy, slow when bored. Think of when Rory sees a new book, she gets excited and grabs it.

Looking time

How long baby look at stuff. Longer look means baby interested or surprised. Like when Lorelai sees the perfect coffee and can't take her eyes off it.

Habituation

Baby get used to same thing and stop caring. New thing make baby pay attention again. Similar to Rory getting used to her school routine but being surprised when Jess shows up.

Perceptual narrowing

Baby's brain clean up; they see fewer faces as they grow up. Like when Rory stops recognizing old friends from childhood.

Motor milestones

Big steps in baby moving: lift chin, roll over, sit up, crawl, walk. Like Rory learning to ride a bike for the first time.

Cultural differences in motor development

Babies in different places grow strong in different ways due to what people do. Think of how different communities in Stars Hollow celebrate milestones.

Visual Cliff experiment

Baby crawl and not scared of high place. When baby knows crawling better, they get scared. Like when Rory feels brave to take a leap in her relationships but learns to be cautious.

Operant learning

Baby learn by what happens after they do things. Like when Lorelai learns to avoid certain conversations with Emily after the last family dinner.

Deferred imitation

Baby see someone do thing and can do it later, shows they remember. Like how Rory mimics Lorelai’s sarcasm after hearing it many times.

Violation of expectancy

Baby stare longer when something surprising happen, show they know about things. Like when Taylor does something unexpected in town, and everyone is shocked.
