Mental Illness
A condition involving dysfunctional patterns of cognition, emotionality, and/or behavior considered deviant in a person's society or culture.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
A disorder characterized by continual feelings of worry, anxiety, physical tension, and irritability across multiple areas of life.
Panic Disorder
Characterized by repeated and unexpected panic attacks, along with persistent concerns about future attacks.
Phobia
An intense fear of an object or situation that is greatly out of proportion to its actual threat.
Agoraphobia
A fear of being in situations where escape is difficult or help unavailable in the event of panic.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Marked emotional disturbance after experiencing or witnessing a severely stressful situation.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Condition marked by repeated immersion in obsessions or compulsions.
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
A chronic state involving low mood, diminished interest in pleasurable activities, and various physical and emotional symptoms.
Bipolar Disorder
A condition marked by intense shifts in mood, energy levels, and behavior, cycling between depression and mania.
Personality Disorder
A condition in which personality traits are inflexible and lead to distress or impairment.
Dissociative Disorders
Involve disruptions in consciousness, memory, identity, or perception.
Schizophrenia
A severe disorder of thought and emotion associated with a loss of contact with reality.
Autism Spectrum Disorders
A category including autistic disorder and Asperger’s disorder, characterized by a range of symptoms in social interaction and communication.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Marked by excessive inattention, impulsivity, and activity affecting ability to pay attention and follow directions.
Culture-bound Syndromes
Mental illnesses specific to one or a few societies, representing culture-related expressions of more general mental illness.
Deinstitutionalization
The process of releasing hospitalized psychiatric patients and closing mental hospitals.
