  • the civil war was fought over slavery

  • the only reason grant (republican) won the election is because of free male black vote

  • the democrats would have won if not for free male black vote right after the civil war

  • 1863 proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction

  • any confederate state that had 10% of the population swear loyalty to the United States could be readmitted to the Union. —> This would benefit the states by allowing them to quickly restore their government and economy, keep their land and avoid harsher penalties to move past the devastating Civil War and reunite the nation.

  • This plan died with him

How come the Republicans tell the South what to do and enforce it? How come the Radical Republicans are able to do Reconstruction?

  • Because the South was too occupied by the union , the Northern Army was in the South

  • (the South turned in their guns the Northern army had just won the war so now the South is an occupied territory)

  • whatever the North voted for, they could do

  • Black Codes—>basically almost immediately recreated the system of slavery (Ex: no interacial marriage)

  • Made rules only Black people could follow

  • Kept slavery in place even though it was illegal

  • Stole the rules from Black people

  • The response by the Radical republicans is the 14th Amendments

  • A black minority in a town could win every election because all the white soldiers fought for the Confederacy

  • During Radical reconstruction only guys who could win were black guys—> basically become governor

  • South couldn’t do anything about it because the Union Army was right there

  • Their idea was if they intimidated the Black vote get the Black voter to not show up they could switch the election back to people they wanted in office

  • It worked/ effective

  • had white robes (because of the ghost +water thing) saying they were dead confederates

  • being a scallywag could get you killed

  • Carpetbaggers-northern white guys who went south for reconstructions

  • both Scallywag and Carpetbaggers were despised and made a lot of money

After Grant Republicans run a guy named…

  • Rutherford B Hayes who went against a guy named Tilden

  • Tilden won but didn’t have enough electoral college → then sends to committee which is equal part republican and democratic

tilden was supposed to win but..

  • Rutherford talks to the Democrats in 1877 and tells them if they let him win he will pull the union/ northern troops from the south which would end Radical Reconstruction→ democrats take the deal→ ends freemans burrough, the KKK is not needed anymore

  • gets bad for African Americans in 1877→ no one there to enforce the law (Compromise of 1877)

  • R.B. Hayes isn’t a good president

  • almost like Black codes come back
