Tenochtitlán
Capital city of the Aztec Empire. Located on marshy islands on the West side of Lake Tetzcoco. Located in same place as modern-day Mexico City.
Aztec
Spanish ruler Hernán Cortés conquered these Mesoamerican people, 1519-1528. Central America (Mexico), centralized architectural layout of government (Places of worship at the center of thecapital, with living places farther out at the outskirts). Fierce warriors that participated in human and captive sacrifices, sometimes sacrificing thousands of people at a time.
Pueblo Indians
Spanish explorers that lived in small villages (called pueblos). Spanish encountered them in the sixteenth century.
Great League of Peace
Alliance between the Iroquois tribes, originally formed between 1450-1600. Used their power to force the European to work with them in the form of fur trade and wars across (what we know today as) eastern North America.
Giovanni de Verrazano
Florentine navigator, sailed along the east coast of North America in 1524 and described the indigenous people as “beautiful of stature and build.” Then thought that they were “too free” (not meant as a compliment).
Inca
South America (Think Modern-Day Peru), Andes, intricate roadway systems & terrace farming. The had the “Sun-God” and also there was a warrior so powerful that they said that the rocks would start levitating when he fought.
Mound builders
North America. Built mounds, typically along rivers. Important rivers: Mississippi and Ohio.
Iroquois
Group of tribes: Seneca, Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, and Onondaga. In the North East region (New York). Hudson River.
