Pastor
A priest who exercises the pastoral care of a parish, or parishes by carrying out the functions of teaching, sanctifying, and governing.
Parochial Vicar
Represents the pastor, and is also called the associate pastor.
Apostolic succession
The uninterrupted passing on of apostolic preaching and authority from the apostles directly to all bishops, accomplished by the laying of hands when a bishop is ordained in the sacrament of holy orders as instituted by Christ.
Diaconate
The vocation and ministry of a deacon.
Diosecan bishop
The chief shepherd and spiritual leader of a diocese; the one with personal jurisdiction, entrusted with the power to govern the pastoral functions of the diocese.
Episcopate
The position or office of a bishop.
Magisterium
The church's living teaching office, which consists of all bishops, in communion with the pope, the bishop of Rome.
Presbyteraten
The name given to priests as a group, especially in a diocese; based on the Greek word presbyter, which means elder.
Bishop
Head of the diocese.
Archbishop
Named head of an archdiocese.
Cardinal
Appointed by the pope, serves as papal elector (cannot vote past 80 years old because of loss of good judgment when aging).
Monsignor
The title given to a priest whom the local bishop wishes to give special honors to for exceptional service to the church.
Vicars
Priests who are appointed by the bishop, have the authority to make decisions on his behalf, and are given the title 'very reverend'.
Vocations director
A 'recruiter' for vocations who interacts with current seminarians, is in charge of priestly formation and preparation, and reaches out to young men of the diocese to encourage and help develop them during discernment.
Military chaplain
A priest or spiritual leader that provides guidance and helps active duty soldiers on the battlefield.
4 Pillars of Formation
Human formation, Spiritual formation, Intellectual formation, and Pastoral formation (outlined by John Paul II).
Four Stages of Seminary
Propaedeutic stage, Discipleship stage, Configuration stage, and vocational synthesis.
Dalmatic
A new vestment given to a deacon at ordination.
Book of Gospels
An item handed to a deacon at ordination when commissioned to preach.
Chasuble
A vestment associated with a priest at ordination.
Chalice
An item associated with a priest at ordination.
Crosier
An item associated with a bishop at ordination.
Miter
A vestment associated with a bishop at ordination.
Ring
An item associated with a bishop at ordination.
Melchizedek
The first priest mentioned in the Old Testament.
Saint Peter
The first bishop, who was ordained around AD 30-33.
Religious Priests
Priests who belong to a particular religious order, are ordained by a bishop with permission of the religious superior, are obedient to the religious superior, and make 3 vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience during their final vow ceremony.
Diocesan Priests
Priests who belong to a particular church or geographical diocese under a local bishop, and make 3 promises at ordination: obey the bishop, remain faithful to chaste celibacy, and pray the liturgy of the hours.
