Metaphor
A figure of speech that makes a comparison without using "like" or "as", such as "Knowledge is a key" or "The princess was the moon" in The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.
Rhyme
A literary effect that occurs when words end with the same sound, making poems sound musical, emotional, and easier to remember.
Meter
The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry, functioning like a beat in music.
Haiku
A form of poetry defined by a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.
Tone
The author's attitude toward the subject, which reveals how the author feels about filial duty and sacrifice in The Aged Mother through respectful, loving, and reflective attitudes.
Diction
The author's choice of words, illustrated by comparing the sentence "The king walked." with the stronger phrasing "The mighty king marched."
