Submandibular Region
Area located beneath the mandible that includes vital structures such as glands, nerves, and muscles.
Lingual Nerve
Branch of CN V3 that provides general sensory innervation to the tongue and is joined by the chorda tympani.
Hypoglossal Nerve (CN XII)
Nerve responsible for motor innervation of most of the tongue muscles.
Suprahyoid Muscles
Muscles located above the hyoid bone that assist in elevating the hyoid during swallowing.
Mylohyoid Muscle
Muscle that forms the floor of the mouth, acting as a boundary between the oral cavity and neck.
Submandibular Gland
Salivary gland located in the submandibular triangle, involved in the production of saliva.
Sublingual Gland
Small salivary gland located beneath the tongue that releases saliva through multiple ducts.
Geniohyoid Muscle
Muscle that assists in tongue movement and elevates the hyoid bone during swallowing.
Digastric Muscle
Muscle with two bellies that aids in depress the mandible and elevates the hyoid during swallowing.
Facial Artery
Artery that supplies blood to the face and is associated with the submandibular triangle.
Lingual Vein
Vein that drains blood from the tongue and joins the internal jugular vein.
Taste Sensation
The sensation of taste realized through the facial nerve (CN VII) and glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX).
V3 (Mandibular Division)
A branch of the trigeminal nerve providing sensory innervation to the teeth, gingivae of the mandible, and the floor of the mouth.
Intrinsic Tongue Muscles
Muscles located within the tongue that control its shape and movement, innervated by CN XII.
Frenulum of Tongue
Fold of tissue located under the tongue that connects it to the floor of the mouth.
Sublingual Fold
Membranous fold overlying the sublingual gland, which contains openings of its ducts.
Taste Pathways
Nerves involved in taste sensation from different regions of the tongue, including CN VII, IX, and X.
Hypoglossal Nerve Function
Innervates tongue muscles for movement; essential for speech and swallowing.
Coronoid Process
Projection of the mandible where muscles like temporalis attach.
Vallate Papillae
Large papillae located on the posterior part of the tongue that are involved in taste.
