Marking Gauge
used on wood to mark a line or point parallel to an edge
Mortise gauge
used for marking out the parts on a martise and tenon joint
Marking out tools for metal
scriber - which cuts into the surface slightly to make the mark
centre punch - used on metal to mark the position of a hole and to aid the drilling process
Marking out tools for polymers
Chinagraph pencil/dry wipe marker - used to draw a line bend on acrylic
scriber - used to show a bend line for heat application
craft knife
Odd leg callipers
mark a line parallel to an edge usually on metals or polymers
Internal callipers
measure the distance between two opposite sides such as a channel or a hole
External callipers
measure an external distance such as the thickness of material of external diameter
Set square
used on paper, boards
used at 45, 30, 60, 90 degrees
Try square
used on wood and manu boards to makr 90 degrees
Engineers square
used on metals to mark lines at 90 degrees to an edge
Mitre square
used on wood or manu boards, to mark 45 degrees such as mitre joints
Micrometers
give a manual or digital reading most commonly used for external thickness or diameters
up to +-0.001mm
Vernier callipers
give a digital reading and are generally used for external and internal measurments (and depth)
accurate to +-0.02mm
Densitometer
A measuring device used to determine the degree of darkness (optical density)
used on printing inks for paper and board
Dividers
marking out and measuring tool used with a ruler
measure the distance between points on a material, and create circles
used on sheet wood, metal or polymer
Jigs
a jig holds the work and guides the tool, eliminating the need to repeatedly mark
Fixture
something holds work in a given position while a manufacturing process takes place
used when welding metal
Go/no-go gauges
speed up the process of finding dimensional accuracy
its a system set up to pass or fail a product on size
