Communism shared some of the wealthy’s money with the poor so poor people like it. BUT this scared Americans some did not want communism to replace capitalism. So Mitchel Palmer deported any potential communists.

1925 Trial in Tennessee where Scopes (Highschool biology teacher) taught his students about evolution but was then tried for going against the Butler Act which prohibited the teaching of evolution because it went against the Bible. Symbol of Religous Fundamentalism vs. Scientific Inquiry.Prosecuted by William Jennings Bryan (Fundamentelist) Vs Clarence Darrow

When the case was over Scopes was found guilty fined him $100 but it was then over turned.

Sacco and Vanzetti

2 Italian Born immigrant Socialists were accused of Murder in 1921. Not so Much guilty for what they allegedly did but for who they are. They were given a very short trial with little evidence and bias jury Vanzetti were given the electric chair (completely innocent). Symbol of anti immigrant/anti racial prejudice.

Founded Ford Motor Company and Scientific Managment (time and motion management) how long does it take one person to do a specific task. Revolutionized car production through assembly line (Fredrick W. Taylor too) mass production and interchangable parts. Game Changer Mass Production of something makes it cheaper. Made new jobs mechanic,gas pumpers,advertising on the roads, road pavers, etc and car garages. Paid workers a lot and encouraged them to buy cars from their job put the money right back into their pockets. MASS CONSUMPTION

3/1932 “Bank Holiday” for a week. FDR checks what banks are doing what they’re supposed half of them closed,but as soon as they opened up again ppl came running back.

Hoover Villes

Towns of homeless people made of scraps from the homes from before they got evicted. Anything related to poverty had the word Hoover in it becuase Americans believed it was his fault. Newspapers homeless people used to cover themselves “Hoover Blankets.”

Job creation agency that hired young unemployed men to fix the enviroment. Jobs were pretty skilless (ex: I'll pay you $10 a week to scare off pigeons in NYC) Made by FDR’s Brain Trust kinda controversial why is the govt making jobs

Opposite of “Trikkle Down Economy” give money to the rich businessmen then they will use it on their business. Give money/jobs to the poor they spend it and creates more jobs it trikkles up to the big guys at the top. Neither works

Made by FDR’s brain trust Govt fixes prices of farm products and subsidizes farmers and gave them a check to not farm. Farmers protest by purposefully spoiling crops bcuz they’re not making enough $ while there are people who are starving. Roosevelt and his brain trust decide the prices of crops. Controvertial

Tennesee Valley Authority (TVA)

Provides electricity to 5 states. In the 1930s electricity straight to ur house was rare unless you lived in the cities. So this program prodvided electricity to the most rural areas. Controvertial bc providing electricity is not the govt’s jobs. But it made many jobs (installing electricty)

Measuring how long it takes each person to do a task. Realised the best way for us to make good was through the assembly lines. Mass production= Mass Consumption Plenty of stuff to sell so advertising was huge. “Can afford it now, just go into debt!” No more selling overseas

Changes

Politically- isolation from the rest of the world and going back to “normalcy” no more immigrants and interfering with affairs/ people out of the U.S. Rest of the world is on the brink of dictatorship we are ignoring them

Socially- Fuck immigrants, fuck rules, drinking,smoking, shorter hair, more make up, shorter skirts
