Seen as a moral compass- a strong one leads to high guilt for actions reducing likelihood of criminal behaviour
Underdeveloped superego
Unable to feel guilt so are dominated by id and selfish impulses
Overdeveloped superego
More likely to feel overwhelming guilt and commits crime as punishment relieves the conscience
Displacement
When the focus of a strong emotion is shifted from the actual target to a neutral one
Sublimation
Strong id impulse is expressed in a more socially acceptable manner
