What is parenting?
The process of promoting the physical, emotional, social and intellectual development and health and wellbeing of a child from birth to adulthood
What are some considerations adults need to consider when becoming a parent?
Changes in responsibility and their ability to meet the needs of a child, whether they can provide an environment that will promote optimal development.
How can a parent achieve a child’s physical needs?
Adequate amount and variety of nutritious food to meet growth and energy needs, access to health care to meet the need for good health.
How can a parent achieve a childs intellectual needs?
Interaction with other caregivers and peers to meet the need for communication, oppurtunities to play and toys to meet the need for curiosity.
How can a parent achieve a childs emotional needs?
Providing positive care to meet the need to feel loved, wanted and connected, providing consistent warm attention to meet the need for affection and reassurance
How can a parent achieve a childs social needs?
Encouraging family connections and relationships, secure environment and positive interaction to meet the need for a sense of belonging.
How can relationships change when a child is present?
for partners, relationships will thrive on spending time together. For family, family members roles change into things like grandparents or aunties and uncles.
What are stressors, and what are examples?
Stressors are factors that can cause a state of strain, tension or stress, commonly assosicated with parenting , and examples might be a lack of sleep, financial issues, or feeling lonely and isolated.
What are examples of social support for new parents?
money, babysitters, help with meal preparation
What are examples of emotional support?
Active listening, empathising and validating, problem solving.
What is antenatal care?
The medical attention given to pregnant women before their babies are born.
What is an example of a state government resource that is given to parents?
The Maternal and Child Health Service
What are more local government resources for new parents
Playgroups, recreation facilities, long day care etc.
What is fertilisation?
The fusing of a sperm and egg cell. Marks the beginning of pregnancy. Also known as conception.
What is a zygote ?
cell created when a sperm and egg cell fuse.
What are examples of assisted conception?
IUI, IVF
What is the germinal stage? when does it span?
The germinal stage starts at fertalisation and ends with implantation, at around 0-2 weeks
