Chassis/tower
The computer case
Case
the enclosure that houses all the internal components of a computer, such as the motherboard, CPU, RAM, storage drives, GPU, and PSU. Its primary functions are protection, organization, and facilitating proper cooling.
Functions of a Computer Case
Protection, Organization, Cooling, Aesthetics
Protection
Shields delicate internal components from dust, physical damage, and electromagnetic interference.
Organization
Provides mounting points and bays for all components, keeping them securely in place and allowing for neat cable management.
Cooling
Designed with airflow in mind, featuring vents and mounting points for fans to draw in cool air and expel hot air, preventing components from overheating.
Aesthetics
Cases come in a wide variety of designs, colors, and materials, allowing users to customize the look of their computer.
Form Factor Compatibility
Cases are designed to support specific motherboard form factors (e.g., ATX, Micro-ATX, Mini-ITX). A full-size ATX motherboard will not fit into a Mini-ITX case.
Full Tower
Largest cases, offering maximum space for components, cooling, and expansion.
Mid-Tower
Most common size, balancing space with a manageable footprint.
Mini-Tower/Small Form Factor (SFF)
Compact cases designed for smaller motherboards and systems where space is a premium.
Airflow and Cooling
Cases typically have front intakes, rear/top exhausts, and often side vents. Many come with pre-installed fans, and additional fan mounting points or radiator support for liquid cooling are common.
Drive Bays:
Spaces for mounting 2.5-inch (SSDs) and 3.5-inch (HDDs) storage drives.
Front Panel I/O
Provides easily accessible ports on the front or top of the case, such as USB ports, audio jacks, and power/reset buttons.
Cable Management
Features like cutouts, channels, and tie-down points behind the motherboard tray help route cables neatly, improving aesthetics and airflow.
