design process
a system that organises how a product is developed
primary research
Conducting research to collect new data to solve a marketing information need.
design brief
A written plan that identifies a problem to be solved, its criteria, and its constraints. The design brief is used to encourage thinking of all aspects of a problem before attempting a solution.
design specification
A list of requirements, constraints and considerations that a yet-to-be-designed product must fulfil.
analysis of existing products
Used to identify issues and where the product can be developed from to help guide the design of a better product for market purposes
investigation and analysis of materials
industrial tests can be done on materials that are being considered to compare the suitability
inspiration materials
mood boards, inspiration boxes, and job bags can be used to inspire design ideas
idea generation
the method used to help generate ideas such as mind maps
SCAMPER technique
Substitute
Combine
Adapt

thinking hats
a phrase created by Edward De Bono to describe his six ways of thinking and problem solving. Each hat is colour-coded to help people remember which type of thinking is associated with each. Facts (white), intuition (red), creativity (green), judgment/negative (black), logic/positive (yellow), and control (blue).
development through discussion
developing ideas by discussing with a client or a target market usually through receiving feedback from an initial concept/idea
illustration
methods of drawing used to depict ideas and concepts visually for clients etc
design sepcification development
the creation of a design spec after discussions with clients and target markets etc
modelling
essential within design in developing ideas or prototyping
planning
the process of anticipating future events and determining strategies to achieve organizational objectives in the future
planning in commercail manufacture
commercially some stages of manufacture can be done along side of each other which need to be adapted into the plan so manufacture is as short as possible
evaluation
gauging the extent to which the marketing objectives have been achieved during the production of a product
testing
part of the evaluation of a product to see if it suits the function
collaborative working
working together on the design of a product
cyclic nature of commercial design and manufacture
feedback creates new iterations of design its not a linear process
