Context Clues
Words around an unfamiliar word that help explain it.
Definition Context Clue
The meaning of the word is directly explained in the sentence.
Synonym Context Clue
A nearby word or phrase has a similar meaning to the unknown word.
Antonym Context Clue
An opposite meaning helps explain the unknown word.
Example Context Clue
Examples are given to help explain the word.
Inference
A conclusion based on evidence and reasoning.
Explicit Meaning
Information directly stated in the text.
Implicit Meaning
Information suggested but not directly stated.
Excerpt/Passage
A short piece taken from a longer work, such as a book, article, speech, or story.
Figurative Language
Language that is not meant literally.
Idiom
A phrase or expression whose meaning is different from the literal meaning of the words.
Alliteration
The repetition of the same beginning consonant sound in nearby words.
Simile
Comparing using “like” or “as. ”
Metaphor
A direct comparison without “like” or “as. ”
Personification
Giving human qualities to nonhuman things.
Hyperbole
Extreme exaggeration.
Onomatopoeia
A word that imitates or sounds like the noise it describes.
Oxymoron
A figure of speech that combines two opposite or contradictory words.
Euphemism
A mild or indirect word or phrase used in place of one that may seem harsh or unpleasant.
Allusion
A reference to a famous person, place, event, book, movie, or idea that the reader is expected to recognize.
Imagery
Descriptive language appealing to the senses.
Symbolism
Using objects or ideas to represent something else.
Irony
A difference between expectation and reality.
Verbal Irony
Saying the opposite of what is meant.
Situational Irony
When the opposite of what is expected happens.
Dramatic Irony
When the audience knows something characters do not.
Foreshadowing
Hints about future events.
Flashback
A scene from the past inserted into the story.
Dialogue
Conversation between characters.
Pacing
The speed at which a story moves.
Suspense
A feeling of excitement or tension.
