Broca’s Aphasia

• expressive, nonfluent, production aphasia

• normal comprehension but poor language production and writing abilities

Wernicke’s Aphasia

• receptive, fluent, comprehension aphasia

• speak fluently but can’t comprehend spoken or written language

Dejerine Aphasia

• reading aphasia

• can speak and understand speech but cannot read or write

Conduction Aphasia

• comprehension and production are disconnected

• can’t repeat new words, frequent speech errors

Bilingualism

• can instantaneously switch language comprehension in Wernicke’s area

• slight delay in switching spoken language in Broca’s area (requires a signal from basal ganglia)

Sign language

• damage to Wernicke’s impairs ability to comprehend gestures

• damage to Broca’s impairs ability to make gestures
