What are closed questions?

Questions in which the individuals select their response from a choice of predetermined options

What are strengths of closed questions?

• quantitative data - easy to compare

• easier to analyse/interpret

What are weaknesses of closed questions?

• limited response - no reasoning

• less detail

What are open questions?

Questions where individuals can respond in any way they like and not restricted in any way

What are strengths of open questions?

• qualitative data - detail

• provides context/resoning

What are weaknesses of open questions?

• hard to interpret

• hard to compare responses

What are rating scales?

Presents users with an item and asks them to select from a number of choices with its options representing degrees of opinion

What are likert scales?

A type of question that measures attitudes using a participants response to a statement (usually from strongly disagree - strongly agree)

What are semantic differentials?

A type of question that asks participants to rate rate their responses between an opposing pair of descriptive words

What are strengths of rating scales?

• produce quantitative data

• allow measurement of more complex attitudes

What are the weaknesses of rating scales?

• lack detail so participants cannot express opinions fully, lowers validity

• central tendency bias
