Navigation Laws
Laws that forced colonists to trade with Britain and British colonies on British ships only.
Molasses Act
Taxed non-British originated molasses, sugar, and rum. (1733)
Proclamation Line
Established a boundary where colonists could and couldn’t settle. (1763)
Currency Act
Limited the circulation of fiat paper money in the colonies to limit inflation of colonial paper money vs British silver. (1751, later 1764 until 1773)
Sugar Act
Lowered the tax on sugar but increased smuggling prevention; angered merchants because British could seize goods without due process.
Quartering Act
Required colonists to house and feed British soldiers. (1765)
Declaratory Act
Parliament proclaimed it had authority over the colonies “in all cases whatsoever.” (1766)
Townshend Acts
Duties on the import of glass, paint, paper, lead, & tea. (1767 - 1770)
Tea Act
Gave British East India Company a monopoly on tea but overall lowered the price. (1773)
Intolerable (Coercive) Acts
Closed the port of Boston, placed Mass under military rule, and required colonists to quarter the military. (1774)
Quebec Act
Gave authority of the Ohio Valley to Quebec. (1774)
