What is an isoline map?

How do quantitative data and qualitative data differ in geographic analysis?
Quantitative data consists of numerical counts, measurements, ranges, and statistical calculations, whereas qualitative data consists of descriptive observations, text reports, travel narratives, media accounts, and personal interviews.
What are the four major geospatial technologies described in geographic data collection?
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), satellite navigation systems (such as GPS), remote sensing, and online mapping/visualization tools.

A computer system designed to capture, store, layer, and analyze large volumes of spatial data points rapidly.
What is remote sensing?
The collection of geographic data about Earth's surface without physical contact, typically using aerial photography or satellite imagery.
What role does the U.S. Census Bureau play in collecting geographic data?
It conducts decennial population counts via surveys to determine residential status, allocate federal funding, and decide congressional representation.
What is the difference between absolute location and relative location?
Absolute location is an exact, unvarying position defined by coordinates (latitude and longitude) or a street address, whereas relative location describes a place in relation to other surrounding places.
How does the geographic concept of "place" differ from "space"?
Space refers to the geometric perspective or area between defined boundaries, while place refers to a specific location distinguished by human and physical characteristics that endow it with unique meaning and feelings.
What is distance decay?
The spatial principle that interaction between two locations decreases as the distance between them increases.
What is time-space compression?
The process by which modern technology and transportation improvements (such as cars, bridges, and the internet) cause relative distances between places to effectively shrink.
How does Environmental Determinism differ from Possibilism?
Environmental Determinism asserts that human behavior, culture, and social development are strictly controlled by physical environment and climate, whereas Possibilism maintains that humans actively adapt to and modify their environment to overcome physical constraints.
What are the four primary scales of analysis utilized by geographers?

What is a formal (or uniform) region?
An area defined by one or more shared, unifying physical or cultural characteristics, such as common language, climate, or legally defined political boundaries.
What is a functional (or nodal) region?
An area organized around a central focal point or node that is tied to surrounding locations through transportation, communication, or economic activity.
What is a perceptual (or vernacular) region?
An area based on people's informal feelings, attitudes, and subjective impressions rather than strict scientific or objective criteria.
According to the Core-Periphery model, what characterizes core regions versus peripheral regions?
Core regions feature high development, advanced infrastructure, and financial investment, whereas peripheral regions exhibit lower development, lower agricultural/industrial density, and less infrastructure.
