Building block for posterior sextants
Sequence for establishing a finger rest
Me
Assume the block position for treatment area
Patient
Establish patient chair and head position
My equipment
Adjust the unit light. Pause and self check the clinician, patient, and equipment position
Non—dominant hand
Grasp mirror and establish finger rest
Dominant hand
Grasp instrument and pause to evaluate finger placement in grasp
Finger rest
Establish finger rest near first tooth to be treated
Pause to evaluate finger rest
Is tip of ring finger on a secure tooth surface?
is ring finger straight, acting as a support beam?
Is my finger placement in the grasp still correct?

Upcoming flashcards practice for finger rest (Maxillary posterior, toward)
Refer to pohotos

Maxillary left posterior sextants, facial aspect
3 o’ clock position
Chin up
Mirror use (Retraction)
Retract the buccal mucosa w/ the mirror
Use mirror for indirect vision to view distal surfaces
Use extraoral finger rest w/ dental mirror
Second molar, facial aspect
Finger rest on the occlusal surface
First premolar, facial aspect
Finger rest on incisal surface of one of maxillary anterior teeth

Maxillary right posterior sextants, Lingual aspect
3 o’ clock position
Chin up
Mirror use
Use mirror to view the distal surfaces of the teeth
Second molar, lingual aspect
Finger rest on the occlusalfacial line angle
First premolar, lingual aspect
Finger rest on occlusofacial line angle or incisal edge

Tip: Dominant hand is positioned corectly if you can see the underside of middle and ring fingers
Second molar, facial aspect
Finger rest on the occlusal surface
First premolar, facial aspect
Finger rest on incisal surface of one of maxillary anterior teeth

Maxillary left posterior sextants, Lingual aspect

Preventative strategies: Stretches
Muscle health, balance of forces, blood flow
Hold stretches 10—30 seconds
Strong trunk and shoulders stabilize body in neutral position
Most hygienist sit for long period of time = muscle tension & stiffness
Unbalanced muscle position = muscle imbalances (tightness in 1 group and weakness in another = MSD)
Take work breaks, chair stretching throughout the day between patients
Rec to chair stretch every 30—60 mins throughout the day
Benefits of stretching
Warms up muscle before work
Prevent strains and spams
Decrease soreness and tender spots
Increase production of joint synovial fluid — reduce joint friction
Increase range of motion, promote flexibility
Increase nutrient supply to vertebral disc of spine
Reduce stress and promote relaxation
How to stretch safely
Assume starting position
Breath in as you begin stretch
Hold stretch for 10 secs
Slowly release to starting position. Repeat stretch.
Never stretch in painful range. If pain, stop immediately

Types of stretches
aching back
Lift back
Important thumb
Open and close
ear to armpit
Chin to chest
up and over
crack a walnut
spinal twist / variation
roll down
ear to shoulder rainbow
wrist relaxer
