What hybridization can carbon have?
Carbon can be sp3, sp2 and sp hybridized.
What is the bond angle for sp3, sp2 and sp hybridized carbon?
The bond angle for sp3, sp2 and sp hybridized carbon is 109.5°, 120° and 180°, respectively.
What is the geometry of sp3, sp2 and sp hybridized carbon atoms?
Tetrahedral, Trigonal planar and Linear is the geometry of sp3, sp2 and sp hybridized carbon atoms.
All members of a homologous series have similar chemical properties and a regular change in physical properties.
Explain this statement. (3m)
All members of a homologous series have the same functional group, eg the double C=C bond in alkenes and hydroxyl group (--OH) in alcohols. The same functional group is responsible for their similar chemical properties and reactions.
Each member of a homologous group differs by a –CH₂ group.
As the chains increase in length by a regular –CH2 increment, the interactions are change in a regular way from one member to the next. Therefore, physical properties, such as melting/boiling point will increase in a regular way as the intermolecular van der Waals dispersion forces increase in a regular way.
