I generally didn’t give a lot of thought to the various genres of writing that I interact with on a daily basis, but this is because these are genres or conventions that we’ve all learned and accepted. It seems intuitive now, but it’s actually learned through recurrence and habitual response.

You point out that the myth about “good” writing being writing that is free of mistakes or grammatical errors is a common misconception. As tutors, this is a valuable distinction that we can make when talking about writing with writers who may be frustrated or discouraged by past writing experiences that failed to value their writing for its authentic content, such as clarity, logic and voice of the piece.
