Brain stem

Towards the base of the brain (made up of Midbrain, Pons and Medulla oblangata)

• Breathing

• Digestion

• Circulation

• Receives sensory information (sensory neurons)

• Broken down into 3 individual structure

Medulla oblongata

Based at the base of the brain stem (the closer to the brain stem the more basic the function)

• Blood pressure

• Heart rate

Anything cardiovascular are all looked after in the medulla oblongata

Cerebellum

Behind the upper brain stem

• Motor control (when you do sports it’s the cerebellum that gives you coordination)

Thalamus

Sits on top of the brain stem

The control centre (sends data where it needs to go

Hypothallamus

Just above the roof of your mouth

Homeostasis  Maintaining body temperature Regulation of systems

Pituitary gland

Hanging/ directly below the hypothalamus

Sending out hormones (nerves that flow in and out - keeping water balance the same and oxytocin)

Cerebrum

Outer casing

The main part of the brain )80% of your brain is made up of the cerebrum) Intergration (making sense of data that comes in) Made up of neurons (synapses and neurons - making sense of infromation as it comes in) In charge of chemical messages when you learn something new

Corpus callosum

Connecting right and left hemisphere

Tissue that can be cut surgically Whatever we see on each side connects to the other Pathway for messages to be sent

Frontal lobe (prefrontal cortex)

Front of the brain

Parietal lobe

Located behind the frontal lobe

Integrates sensory information like touch,pressure and body awareness

Occipital lobe

Located at the back of the brain

Processes visual information

Temporal lobe

Located on the lower side of the brain

Processes auditory information and language

Somatosensory cortex

Located at the front of the parietal lobe

Processes sensory imput from skin, such as touch, heat and pain.
