French and Indian war
The French lose the war so the treaty of Paris is established in 1763, the British find themselves in debt so they want to tax the colonies, proclamation line.
Pontiac’s rebellion
The Native Americans defend themselves from British rule/ go against British rule
Proclamation line of 1763
The British prevent the colonist from settling west of the Appalachian mountains, soldiers were stationed there to keep that rule in check, creates conflict between the British and the colonists.
Stamp Act
Tax on printed goods, first major tax of the British.
Townsend Act
Tax placed on imported goods, sparks more opposition in the colonies
Sons and daughters of liberty
Groups formed to protest against the British rule and taxation, the opposed the stamp act, growing sense of American identity.
Colonist reaction to British taxation
It cause the colonist to boycott British goods and protest against the taxation. It created more division between Britain and the colonies. They were not happy about the change that was made, lead to things like the Boston tea party and Boston massacre.
Influential ideas on American revolution
Thomas Paine common sense: increase patriot sentiment.
Country whigs writings: Great Britain was opposed to government abuse of power.
Influenced by the Enlightenment: John Locke ( natural rights & social contract ) and Montesquieu ( separation of power )

The French aided the colonists in winning the war and became allied with the u.s
Dunmore's proclamation
The British promised all the slaves that fought against the colonist with them in the war freedom, most slaves fought with the British army.
Battle of Yorktown
It was the final battle of the U.S and the British, final defeat of the British, important battle.
Treaty of Paris (1783)
The treaty between the British and the colonies, Generous treaty, the Mississippi River becomes western boundary. U.s gains navigation rights to Mississippi.
Republicanism
Rejection of anarchy. Based on consent of governed individuals. Term to describe the changing in the 1700s. Rule by people not by central authority, elective governments, respect to people’s rights. Americans are “ citizen’s ” not “ subjects ”.

Women upholding republic values though their roles as mother. The step in a direction of rising women’s status in u.s

French Revolution, Haitian revolution, u.s inspired other revolutions to take place.
State Constitution, post 1776
Once the u.s gained independence they had to rewrite the constitution which overall increased democracy and put more power in the legislative view.

The nation government was to weak
No power to tax the people

It showed how weak the national government was because the government was to weak to stop the rebellion.
Northwest ordinance of 1787
The 13 colonies ceded western territory to create new states
Law banned slavery in New Territory, surveyed land to be sold to settlers.
Created the procedures for admitting a new state to u.s ( pop 60,000 )
