Amoxicillin

• Penicillin based antibiotic

• Take with or without food

• Side effects: nausea, diarrhoea, thrush

• Monitor for and allergic reaction

• Finish the entire course

Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid

• Penicillin antibiotic

• Take WITH food

• Side effects: nausea, diarrhoea, thrush

• Monitor for severe diarrhoea and allergic reaction

• Finish the entire course

Flucloxacillin

• Penicillin based antibiotic

• Take on an empty stomach

• Side effects: nausea, diarrhoea, thrush

• Monitor for allergic reaction, yellowing of eyes and skin and pale stools or dark urine

• Finish the entire course

Phenoxymethylpenicillin

• Penicillin antibiotic

• Take on an empty stomach

• Side effects: nausea, diarrhoea, thrush

• Monitor for allergic reaction

• Finish the entire course

Cefalexin

• Cephalosporin

• Take with or without food

• Side effects: nausea, diarrhoea, thrush

• Monitor for severe diarrhoea and allergic reaction

• Finish the entire course

Cefuroxime

• Cephalosporin

• Take WITH food

• Side effects: nausea, diarrhoea, thrush

• Monitor for severe diarrhoea and allergic reaction

• Finish the entire course

Doxycycline

• Tetracycline

• Take WITH food and a glass of water

• Medication is sticky: Avoid lying down for 1 hour after taking medication, can cause reflux

• Side effects: stomach upset

• Other side effects: photosensitivity

• Take 2 hours apart from antacids, vitamins and supplements (iron calcium zinc)

• Monitor for allergic reaction

• Finish the entire course

Azithromycin

• Macrolide

• Take with or without food

• Take 2 hours apart from antacids

• Side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, thrush

• Monitor for allergic reaction

• Finish the entire course

Clarithromycin

• Macrolide

• Take with or without food

• Side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, thrush

• Bitter or metallic taste

• Talk to your doctor and let other health professionals know you are taking this medication, as it interacts with many

• Monitor for allergic reaction

• Finish the entire course

Ciprofloxacin

• Quinolone

• Take on an EMPTY stomach, drink plenty of fluids

• Side effects: Dizziness (avoid alcohol and driving caution), photosensitivity

• Take 2 hours apart from dairy, antacids or mineral supplements (iron calcium zinc)

• Monitor for any numbing or tingling sensation in your fingers or toes, as well as allergic reaction

• Finish the entire course.

Moxifloxacin

• Quinolone

• Take with or without food, do not crush or chew

• Side effects: Dizziness (avoid alcohol and caution driving)

• Monitor for any numbness, tingling sensation in fingers and toes, weakness of muscles, yellowing of skin and eyes, dark urine and allergic reaction

• Take 2 hours apart from antacids, mineral supplements (iron, zinc, calcium)

• Finish the entire course.

Nitrofurantoin

• Take with food or milk

• Side effects: nausea, headache

• Other side effects: drowsy and dizziness (caution driving), urine discolouration

• Monitor for allergic reaction and if you have numbness/tingling

• Finish the entire course

Clindamycin

• Lincosamide

• Take with or without food, with glass full of water

• Avoid lying down for 30 minutes after taking medication

• Side effects: nausea

• Monitor for severe diarrhoea and allergic reaction

Fosfomycin

• Take on an EMPTY stomach

• Take BEFORE BED and AFTER you have emptied your bladder

• Mix contents of the sachet in water and drink immediately

• Side effects: Nausea, diarrhoea

• Monitor for allergic reactions

• Finish the full course

• Note: do not take with ural concurrently, as it can decrease efficacy of medication —> wait 2 days after stopping to use ural

Trimethoprim

• Take with or without food

• Side effect: nausea, rash, vomiting

• Monitor for allergic reaction

• Finish the full course

Trimethoprim + Sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim)

• Take WITH food

• Drink lots of fluid while on this medication

• Side effects: nausea, vomiting, headache

• Monitor for allergic reaction

• Finish the full course
