Why was WMM created?
As the STM has different components to process different types of information
What are the three sub systems?
Phonological loop, visuospatial sketchpad and episodic buffer
What is central executive?
It processes information we received from our senses, making decisions about which issues deserve attention, filtering it before passing the information to the sub systems
What does phonological loop do and what are its components?
Responsible for processing and storing verbal and auditory information.
Phonological store = holds words that have been heard for a short period 1-2 seconds
Articulatory process = holds words you hear by silently repeating them like an inner voice (type of maintenance rehearsal)
What is episodic buffer?
Where visual, verbal and spatial information is integrated to the LTM into similar experience
E.g You watch a movie with visual and sound aspects. Your overall understanding of the plot comes from information retrieved from LTM
What does visuospatial sketchpad do and what are its 2 components?
Responsible for processing visual and spatial information
Visual Cache = stores visual data such as shapes and colours and visual details of what things look like
Inner Scribe = an active store which records the arrangements of objects in the visual field. It helps navigate around these in the physical environment.
What is dual task performance and when can this not work well?
This is when you use different stores at the same time for the same task. This is when it works well.
It will not work well when you use the same stores at the same time for the same task.
