The Dreaming
The central belief system of Aboriginal spirituality regarding the creation and existence of ancestral spirit beings, encompassing all knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal beliefs and practices.
Kinship
A system of relationships, belonging, and responsibility in an Aboriginal group that determines identity, social roles, and marriage rules.
Totem
A representation of a nation, clan, family group, or personal strength/weakness (e.g., the Goanna for Wiradjuri Peoples) that encourages environmental conservation and personal accountability.
Songlines
Representations of the journeys of ancestral beings that reveal resources and help Aboriginal peoples maintain spiritual connection to the land and navigate vast distances.
Dispossession
The action of depriving someone of their land, property, or other possessions, which for Aboriginal peoples led to intergenerational trauma and the loss of spiritual connection and language.
Protection Policy
An 1830s policy aimed at isolating and separating Aboriginal Peoples from "unsuitable" environments, resulting in the loss of cultural identity.
Assimilation Policy
A 1930s policy that took "half-caste" Aboriginal children into predominantly white communities, preventing them from engaging in cultural practices.
Stolen Generations
The mass removal of Aboriginal children from their families by the Government and Church missions between 1900 and 1972.
Bringing Them Home Report
A report stating that between 10-33% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were removed from families between the 1910s and 1970s, leading to higher rates of substance use and incarceration.
Mabo
A 1992 High Court decision involving Eddie Mabo and the Meriam tribe that overturned the legal fiction of "Terra Nullius" and established that Native Title could be claimed.
Native Title Act 1993
Legislation passed by the Keating Government that recognizes the entitlement of Indigenous Peoples to their land in accordance with their laws and customs.
Wik
A 1996 High Court decision involving the Wik and Wik Way peoples which ruled that Native Title and pastoral leases could co-exist, though pastoral leases override Native Title in case of conflict.
Native Title Amendment Act 1998
Legislation introduced by Prime Minister John Howard that made it more difficult for individuals to claim Native Title on pastoral land.
Denominational Switching
The phenomenon within Christianity where individuals move from one denomination to another, often toward Pentecostalism for its charismatic and spiritually engaging worship style.
New Age Religions
A diverse range of spiritualities focusing on individualism, personal health, and self-knowledge, including practices like tarot, crystals, and astrology.
Secularism
The belief in the separation of state, society, and Government from religious institutions, leading to an increase in the number of people identifying with "no religion" (38.9% in 2021).
Ecumenism
The movement aimed toward dialogue, mutual understanding, and unity between different Christian churches and denominations.
National Council of Churches in Australia (NCCA)
Founded in 1994 to foster unity and cooperation among Christian churches through social justice initiatives like "Thursdays in Black" and the "Christmas Bowl" appeal.
NSW Ecumenical Council (NSWEC)
Formed in 1982 to allow 16 member churches in NSW and ACT to reflect on theology and advocate for peace and justice through programs like the Domestic Violence Project.
Interfaith Dialogue
Formal discussion aimed at developing mutual understanding and respect between different religious traditions, such as the Columban Centre for Christian-Muslim Relations.
Reconciliation
The ongoing process involving historical acceptance and the building of an improved relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

A 2017 statement supported by various religious groups (including the Uniting Church and AFIC) seeking a more just future and recognition for First Nations peoples.
Voice to Parliament
A proposed Indigenous body in Parliament supported by 2023 religious initiatives (like the ANIC) to acknowledge and ensure fairness for First Nations people.
