Electron transport system 6 steps
*consists of the transmembrane proteins within the Cristae of the mitochondria
Step 1
The first protein of the chain accepts electrons from NADH. The second protein reacts to FDAH 2.
step 2
-Electrons move from the first protein to a slightly more electronegative carrier.
step 3
Carriers also operate as pumps and drive protons across membranes out of the matrix into the intermembrane space
step 4
Higher proton concentrations in the intermembrane and lower concentration in the matrix forms a gradient.
step 5
protons must re-enter the matrix through an enzyme called ATP synthase.
step 6
protein gradient provides energy needed for ATP synthase to catalyze the synthesis of ATP from ADP and phosphate group 28-30 ATP . oxygen is the last electron acceptor forming water.
