Emission Theory
An ancient vision theory proposed by Plato and Ptolemy stating that vision occurs when rays emitted by the eyes interact with external visible objects.
Aristotle's Color Theory

Value

Complementary Color Scheme
A palette created using hues located directly opposite each other on the color wheel.
Split Complementary Color Scheme
A color combination pairing a central hue with the two hues adjacent to its direct complement.
Clash Color Scheme
A color combination pairing a hue with the color immediately adjacent to its direct complement.
Achromatic Color Scheme
A palette relying strictly on neutral black, white, and grays without hue.
Simultaneous Contrast
The perceptual shift where surrounding colors and background values change how a center color's hue or value is perceived.
Chromostereopsis
A visual phenomenon where vibrant complementary color pairs (such as red and blue) appear at different depths, advancing warm colors and receding cool colors.
The Fluting Effect
A perceptual phenomenon along contiguous gradient bands where the edge of a color block appears lighter next to a darker shade and darker next to a lighter shade.
Bezold Effect
An optical color mixing phenomenon where small, closely interlaid regions of different colors blend from a distance to alter the perceived overall pattern.
Flickering Boundaries
