What is a Hazard?

A hazard is anything with the potential to cause harm

What are the three main types of hazards?

1. Physical

2. Chemical

3. Biological

What are the two types of physical hazards?

1. Lab environment hazards e.g. cleanliness, lighting, noise, ergonomics

2. Equipment-related hazards e.g. heat, glassware, mechanical parts, electrical equipment

What is an ergonomic hazard?

Repeating the same movement, or holding an awkward position for too long, can strain your body over time. Ergonomic hazards associated with manual handling and equipment use

Examples:

• Prolonged standing at lab benches or hoods

• Repetitive pipetting

• Prolonged viewing through a microscope

• Lifting heavy objects

What are some mechanical hazards?

They are lab instruments that have moving parts e.g. centrifuges

What are some thermal hazards?

• Bunsen burner

• Autoclave

• Freezer

What are some examples of electrical hazards?

• Electrical equipment being used next to water

• Faulty equipment

• Improper use of flexible extension cords

What are some protective procedures for physical hazards?

• Keep work area clear and uncluttered.

• Set up a Bunsen burner in the centre of lab bench in an area free of overhanging materials. Never leave a lighted Bunsen burner unattended.

• Keep water away from electrical equipment.

• Wear appropriate PPE.

• Check equipment at regular intervals for any faults
