Dissertation
A long, research-based work, perhaps 10–15,000 words, for a degree or diploma.
Thesis
A very long, original, research-based work, perhaps 80–100,000 words, for a higher degree such as a PhD.
Plagiarism
The serious offense of using other people’s work as if it was yours.
Cram
To study in a very concentrated way for a short time before an exam.
Selective schooling
A system where pupils are chosen for entry, usually for academic reasons.
Comprehensive schooling
A system where everyone enters without exams and education is free, paid for by the government.
Elitism
When a system or organization favors a small, privileged group of people.
League tables
Lists of schools or colleges, from the best down to the worst, ranked based on exam results and other criteria.
Bursary
Money given to pay for studies, usually provided on the basis of financial need.
Scholarship
Money given to pay for studies, usually provided on the basis of academic merit.
Literacy
The ability to read.
Numeracy
The ability to count or perform basic mathematics.
Cover letter
A letter sent with a job application (also called a covering letter) that highlights key points from a CV.
Hands-on
Practical and direct experience rather than theoretical knowledge.
Team player
A person who is good at working effectively with others.
Shortlisted
Selected from a larger group of candidates to be interviewed for a job.
Line manager
The person who is directly responsible for your work within a company structure.
Notice period
The amount of time an employee must continue to work after officially resigning from their job.
Hot-desking
A policy of sharing desks in an office where employees sit at whichever desk is free on a particular day.
Talk shop
An informal term meaning to talk about work during social occasions outside of professional hours.
Run-of-the-mill
An ordinary job or task that is not particularly special or exciting.
Work-life balance
The amount of time spent working compared to the amount of time spent doing things you enjoy.
Perks
An informal term for extra benefits provided by a job in addition to a salary, such as a company car or health insurance.
Skeleton staff
The minimum number of workers needed to keep an operation or organization running.
Loss leader
An item sold for less than its cost to attract customers into a shop where they will buy more profitable items.
Red tape
A negative term for bureaucracy or official rules that seem unnecessary and slow down progress.
