It was the only major female priesthood in Rome, girls chosen were typically from Rome’s most prestigious families, and only 6 girls were allowed in as priestesses and they were given special freedoms enjoyed by no other Roman woman at the time

What was the selection criteria?
The girl had to be healthy, be between 6 and 10 years old with two free and living parents, and chosen by the Pontifex Maximus

Keeping the sacred flame alive found in the temple of Vesta and to make the mola salsa sprinkled onto the heads of sacrificial animals during state sacrifices
How long were they usually in the role for?
Usually 30 years, taking up most of her life (a sign of dedication)
What were their punishments?
Death by burial alive if they broke the vow of chastity (virginity) and were whipped if the sacred flame went out
What was the superstition associated with the sacred flame?
If it went out, Rome would fall as the myth tells that it was brought to Rome from the ashes of Troy by Aeneas
